See wiki page Bartleby, the_Scrivener:
Bartleby, still making a nuisance of himself, sits on the building stairs all day and sleeps in its doorway at night. The narrator agrees to visit Bartleby and attempts to reason with him. He suggests several jobs that Bartleby might try and even invites Bartleby to live with him until they figure out a better solution. Bartleby replies that he would “prefer not to,” and declines the offer.
I am the scrivener who “prefers not to” accept additional work which I cannot realistically complete in the time on hand, even though I do not know how much time that is. Each day lived is one less day to live. Here is how to calculate the odds.
Calculating the Odds:
Dl (days lived) + Dtl (days remaining to live) = complete lifetime
X = remaining days to live, unknown
Xd = desirable time remaining to live to complete projects
Dl / Xd == odds
Example, expressed in years: Dl = 77 years, Xd = 7 more years. Odds of completing projects = 77 / 7 or 1 in 11 chance. Compare this to one more year to live: 77 /1 = the odds are 1 to 77. If you are, say, 55 and you give yourself 20 more years to live, the odds are:
55/20 = 1 in 2.75 that you can do it. If you give yourself 5 years more to live at 55, the odds are 55/5 = 11 to 1.
Setting Xd, the desirable number of remaining days to live, is an exercise in projection of intent based on stamina, vitality, endurance. You may not know what X is, or you may know approximately, or you can decide it yourself in exceptional circumstances. Whatever the case, the last day of Dtl = death, and death is the instrument of passage of command. Passage of command happens no matter what you do, but you can prepare others for it — what I am doing here.

Destiny and Fate: Destiny is what befalls you in life based on known and predictable patterns of time, place, and association. It operates through a web of events in which the unique circumstances of each event are contingent and co-emergent with others. It emerges from the past.
Fate is what befalls you in life due to pure chance. It is an encounter with the unknown and unfamiliar. It comes with the impact of freedom. It emerges from the future. We are all absolutely unfamiliar with our own death, no matter how one may anticipate or prevision it. Death is an act of fate, no matter how it may appear within the routine circumstances of your life pattern, or what you make of it in terms of your known and knowable world.
You face destiny with others, and others share in making your destiny.
You face fate totally on your own. The ultimate solitude in which you exist is the existential “facticity” of death-in-life. If it owns you, you cannot live and thrive completely in the precarious reciprocity of life and death. If you own it, you must prove so by the way you face the passage of command that renders all you love, and all you have done in love, into a deathless spell that forever haunts the karmic pathos of the human condition.
