As you all know, to amuse myself and indulge my boundless sense of self-importance, I often play on my affinity with the paramount Nyingma master, Long Chen Pa, as well as the paramount Nyingma terton, Jigme Linga. As a free-lance terton, I hold the pretense of playing a role in that lineage, perhaps even as the individual who brings it to fruitful completion. Doing so, I use tropes and alphabetic memes: for instance, Jigme Lingpa has my initials.
Well, some time ago Lama Luv Mutt came across a Tibetan word that caught his attention: las. Don’t know where exactly, but I may find it… Anyway, it turns out that las is the Tibetan word for karma. So far, so good, but consider this nuance: going way back to Santa Fe days when I gave classes and lectures in my studio at La Vereda off Palace Avenue, I proposed that karma be understood as an educational process, rather than a punitive one. Thus, karma = educational process or program, or just education. Hold that idea.
The first part of Long Chen Pa’s name is Klong, space, expanse. This word denotes a great expanse and connotes the full dimension of consciousness. It’s a huge meme in Vajrayana. The K is silent, hence pronounced as long.
So, playing on the phonemes, you can compose a name that begins with Long, as does Long Chen Pa.
Now consider the Tibetan word lam: path. Lam is a massive trope in Tibetan Buddhism, a component in the triple trope: ground – path – goal. I actually used that designation in the original breakdown of material on Planetary Tantra on metahistory.org, filing the entries of .php files into those categories. Make that the second component in the name, hence: Long Lam, and add the third component, las. The full name would then be Long Lam Las.
Curiously, perhaps, tinkering with the phoneme long brings it close to john. In fact, as John is pronounced in Mainer dialect, jawn, it comes even closer to a sound-alike. More like this, JAWN LAM LAS. The J and L slide and play across each other. Note also JL is the initials of Jigme Lingpa and yours truly. Figure the odds of this composition coming out in this way.
So what is Long Lam Las in full translation in Tibetan? It is literally “path (lam) of spacious (long) education (las),” or “great expanse of learning, the path of expansive education.” Well, I’d venture to say that is a succinct definition of Nemeta, the platform for the Maitreya Process. As good as it gets! So, toggling from Tibetan to English, a phonemic mirroring of this name Long Lam Las translates into the description of the educational program coming from the one given that name. Figure the odds. If that doesn’t raise a laugh from you, you’re beyond redemption.
And for a final twist, consider this mythophrenic allusion: The hero of Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventure novel, Treasure Island, presented as a series in the early days of the TV, was Long John Silver. Arrgggh, me maties! X marks the spot. There be treasure.
